City of Greenville employees and volunteers from throughout the community participated in roadside and park clean-up projects as part of a "Day of Service" initiative on the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday.City staff cleaning roadway

Nearly 50 City employees participated in the projects, which included roadside cleaning along Stantonsburg Road, a yard beautification project at a home in West Greenville, and trail cleaning at River Park North. The River Park North project drew approximately 125 volunteers, according to organizers.

The majority of City workers, however, participated in a roadside clean-up project along Stantonsburg Road, a primary entryway into the city. City volunteers picked up trash along the side of the road for approximately a one-mile stretch. More than 10 bags of trash were collected during the initiative.

"I could have slept in or played around my house," Senior Economic Developer Christian Lockamy said. "I like to stay busy and saw an opportunity to stay busy, but also to give back."

Not too far away from Stantonsburg Road, members of the Greenville Police Department worked on improvements to the yard and exterior of a home in an effort to help out the home's owner and enhance public safety. Police Chief Mark Holtzman said the efforts of his staff were in line with the department's initiative to prevent crime through environmental design.
