Sanitation Frequently Asked Questions

 Q:

I will be moving to Greenville soon.  How do I get started with sanitation service?

 A. First of all, welcome to Greenville!  Please contact the Public Works Department at (252) 329-4522 to request a "New Resident Information Package" regarding your collection day and instructions on placement/separation of garbage, recycling, and bulky trash.  You can also click here to immediately learn your day of service.

Q.

Do I need to purchase and/or provide my own containers?  How should I prepare my garbage/recycling for collection?

A.

Yes, however the type of containers purchased depends upon which type of service you prefer.  The City offers two types of service:  backyard service and curbside service.

If you select backyard service, each residence is allowed up to three (3) containers for garbage and three (3) containers for recycling affixed with a recycling decal provided by the City.  All containers must be no larger than 32-gallons each and have tight fitting lids so they will not fill with rain water.  These containers will be serviced once per week from the back or side of the house (not in a fenced area or on a porch), and you will be charged $26.00 per month on your utility bill.  This is the default setting: when you open your Greenville Utilities account for a single family home, the account will open with this charge.

If you select curbside service, you must have a City approved rollout-cart, which can be purchased from the Public Works Department.  You can use any type of container you prefer for recycling collection affixed with the City's recycling decal.  All containers must be placed by curbside the night before your day of service and removed from curbside no later than daybreak of the day following scheduled collection.  This container will be serviced once per week. You will be charged $9.60 per month on your utility bill.  The City of Greenville Public Works Department must be notified that you have the City approved rollout-cart in order to receive the reduced fee.

All garbage and recyclables must be placed inside a container.   Bags left sitting around the containers will not be removed.

Q: What is the cost of a City-approved roll-out cart, and how would I obtain this cart?
 A:

Public Works sells two (2) sizes of roll-out carts.  A 64-gallon cart is $58.25, and a 96-gallon cart is $63.75. You may purchase this cart at Public Works,1500 Beatty Street, Greenville, NC, and take the cart with you at the time of purchase, or we will be glad to deliver the cart to your home at no cost.  Upon purchase of this cart, your refuse fee will be reduced to $9.60 per month.

Q: Will my garbage, recycling, and bulky trash be collected at the same time?
 A:

No, different trucks pick up different items throughout your scheduled pickup day.

 Q:

My garbage/recycling was missed.  What do I do?

 A:

Occasionally a container may be missed.  Please call 329-4522, and your container will be serviced as soon as possible.

Q: Will the City pick up refrigerators, hot water heaters, stoves, washers, etc.?
 A:

Yes, these items are considered "white goods" and are picked up every Wednesday at the curbside and by request only.  Please call 329-4522 to request pick up of "white goods".  In addition, other bulky items such as boxes, junk, furniture, etc. will be picked up by curbside on your regular scheduled pickup day.

Q: Do you pick up vegetative material?
 A:

Yes, however large tree limbs are to be cut 5 to 6 feet in length and should be no more than 4 inches in diameter.  Limbs, hedges, and bushes should be piled separately from other trash.  Leaves, grass, pine straw, and other fine vegetative material should be piled separately for collection.  All this materials should be placed by curbside as close to the street as possible (not in the street).

Q: Does the City provide leaf collection?
 A:

Yes, our leaf collection season starts November 1 through March 1.  During this time, leaves should be placed loose at curbside (not in the street).  During the off-season, leaves must be bagged or boxed.  Any leaves placed out by curbside during off-season will be picked up as soon as possible.

Q: Mosquitoes in our area are about to eat us alive!  Does the City offer any assistance?

 A:

Yes, mosquito spraying starts in May and runs through November.  Spraying is a continuous cycle until the entire City has been completed.  Special requests should be made to our department at 329-4522, and spraying will be provided as soon as possible.

Q: I live in a multi-family (apartment) complex.  How do I dispose of my garbage and recycling?
 A:

Your garbage should be placed in dumpsters provided by your complex management.  If the management of your complex offers recycling, you will find blue recycling roll-out carts located in a designated Recycling Center at the complex.  If your complex does not have a recycling program in place, please contact the complex management to let them know of your interest.  In turn, complex management will need to contact Public Works at 329-4048.

A: How would I find out about the Sanitation Holiday Schedule?
 Q:

Click here to view the City's Sanitation Holiday Schedule online.  The City's Sanitation Holiday Schedule calendar is delivered to all single family residences during the month of January.  Scheduled day changes are aired on the Governmental Access Channel and published in The Daily Reflector prior to the upcoming holiday.  You are always welcome to contact Public Works should you have questions about the collection schedule at 329-4522.

Q: How do I dispose of paint?
 A:

Paint cans should be open so paint can fully dry and harden.  Closed containers and liquid paint will not be collected.  Place empty cans or completely dried cans at curbside with lids off.

Q: How do I dispose of tires?
A: Tires are picked up only once per year which is during the Annual Spring Clean-up.  Other times, you may take them to the Pitt County Landfill on Allen Road.   You may contact the landfill at 902-3350.
