On September 10, 2009, the City Council established the Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission to advance Greenville as a bicycle and pedestrian friendly community and to encourage bicycling and walking among its citizens and visitors while also providing advice and recommendations to the Greenville City Council on questions related to bicycle and pedestrian issues.

On March 8, 2021, the City Council dissolved the Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission. In doing so, the Council delegated some of the functions of the commission to the newly-established Multimodal Transportation Commission.
