GREENVILLE, N.C. - The City of Greenville has named Byron Hayes its Director of Financial Services. Hayes is replacing Bernita Demery, who retired on March 31 after 30 years of service.

"I have big shoes to fill," Hayes said. "Mrs. Demery's 30-year tenure was filled with many successes. I look forward to this challenge, and I'm ready to continue the fine work of our department, to take Financial Services to the next level and ensure that we are good stewards of the taxpayer funds."

As Director of Financial Services, Hayes will be responsible for directing the City's Accounting, Purchasing, and Collections Divisions. He will also provide an integral role in the City's budget development and financial reporting through the creation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) and manage the City's debt while arranging for financing of extensive capital projects.

"The mission of the City of Greenville Financial Services Department is 'Providing sustainable financial management that exceeds the expectations of our customers,'" Hayes said. "I want to ensure that we provide superior service to all our stakeholders by ensuring that our organization functions in an efficient and effective manner. The City Council put forth a vision with a series of goals and objectives, and Financial Services intends to carry out the operations of the City in a manner that reflects and enhances those goals and objectives."

Hayes graduated from East Carolina University in 2008 with a degree in Political Science. He earned a Masters of Business Administration from ECU in 2016. Hayes began his tenure with the City of Greenville in November of 2014, serving as the City's financial analyst, business analyst, and financial services manager since that time. Prior to joining the City, he held positions at Vidant Medical Center and BB&T.

"We are thrilled to have Byron accept the position of Financial Services Director," City Manager Ann Wall said. "Byron has demonstrated strong leadership, and he has a proven track record with the City of Greenville. He will do an excellent job of ensuring the City's Financial Services Department is operating efficiently."

Hayes will begin his new position on April 14 at a salary of $104,728 annually.
