GREENVILLE, N.C. - Work will begin on Monday, January 7, 2019 to improve a failed stormwater detention pond at Jaycee Park in Greenville.
The City of Greenville's Public Works Department, Recreation and Parks Department, and Sound Rivers have partnered with East Carolina University and NC State University to begin implementation of a water quality project from the City's Greens Mill Run Watershed Master Plan.
This innovative stormwater project is fully funded through grants awarded by the Clean Water Management Trust Fund and NC Department of Environmental Quality. The project aims to remove harmful invasive species and replace the failed detention pond with native, bottomland hardwood trees in a constructed stormwater wetland. The project will reduce flooding and nutrient pollution and improve the overall quality of the City's important waterways.
Gary Fenton, Greenville Recreation and Parks Director, said that his department is pleased that this project can take place on the edge of Jaycee Park in order to restore the environmental quality of the Park's natural areas.
Lisa Kirby, Greenville Civil Engineer III, said the City is excited to put the newly completed Watershed Master Plans, which were instrumental in acquiring the grant funding, into action.
Sound Rivers is a nonprofit organization representing more than 3,000 members with a mission to monitor and protect the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico River watersheds covering nearly one quarter of North Carolina, and to preserve the health and beauty of the river basins through environmental justice.
Construction will begin on Monday and should be completed by mid-February.
