GREENVILLE, N.C. - A recent citizens survey for the City of Greenville revealed that 80 percent of respondents were satisfied with the city as a place to live, while nearly 70 percent were pleased with the city as a place to work or start a business.

The survey was conducted by the ETC Institute in the fall of 2018 to gather information about City priorities and the quality of City programs and services. In all, 818 citizens responded to the survey by mail, phone, and online. Similar surveys were conducted by the City in 2013 and 2016.

Major service areas that received the highest levels of satisfaction included Fire/Rescue/EMS, sanitation services (trash, recycling, and yard waste collection), customer service, and the quality of Recreation and Parks programs and facilities. Respondents indicated that the City's most important focus areas should be public safety, infrastructure (streets, sidewalks, parking lots, etc.), and economic development.

"These results provide us with valuable information that we can use to improve our services to the citizens of Greenville," City Manager Ann Wall said. "Staff members have already started reviewing the results for their department and formulating plans to address how we can improve in all areas."

The City experienced its most significant increases in satisfaction in the following areas:
  • Availability of job opportunities (12%)
  • Greenville as a place to raise children (10%)
  • Greenville as a place to work or build a business (10%)
  • Feeling of safety in neighborhoods at night (9%)
  • Appearance of the City (9%)
The City's most significant decrease in satisfaction was recorded for the adequacy of public parking in the Uptown District (-11%).
When compared to results from other university cities as well as regional and national survey results, Greenville fared very well, posting satisfaction ratings above the averages of those locations in quality of customer service provided by the City, effectiveness of communication with the public, quality of trash and recycling services, and the quality of the City's Recreation and Parks programs and facilities.

"Most of the communities that we work with have experienced a decrease in satisfaction over the past few years, so it's impressive that overall (Greenville's) satisfaction ratings are similar to the 2016 results," ETC Institute Senior Project Manager Jason Morado said.
