GREENVILLE N.C. - The Greenville City Council on November 12 appointed Valerie Shiuwegar as its new City Clerk. Shiuwegar was sworn into office during a ceremony held at City Hall on November 25.

Shiuwegar has spent the past 12 years as an employee with the City of Greenville, including the past eight as an administrative assistant in the City Clerk's Office where she provided administrative support for the City Clerk, Deputy City Clerk, Mayor, and City Council.

"I am honored and excited for this opportunity to serve the community in the role of City Clerk," Shiuwegar said. "I have seen the many ways that the City has connected, strengthened, and grown our community and I am proud to be a part of  it."

The City Clerk is one of the three employees serving at the pleasure of the Mayor and Council. One of the primary responsibilities of the City Clerk's Office is to maintain the permanent records of the City, which include all minutes of Council meetings, ordinances and resolutions adopted by Council, and contracts. The City Clerk attends Council meetings, transcribes minutes of the meetings and prepares them for the permanent records.
Additionally, the City Clerk updates the City Codes, maintains the City's applications for its 21 boards and commissions, processes ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and proclamations, prepares and monitors the annual budget for the City Clerk's Office and the Mayor and Council, certifies documents, and works with various agencies on annexations.
