The ranking is based on an annual survey which targets initiatives to enhance citizen engagement, policy, operations, and technology and data.

This is the survey’s 14th year, but it is the first time Greenville has been nationally ranked. The survey pointed out thatDigital Cities Winner “residents have ample opportunity to interact with the city online, including the Your NextBus transit planning tool and mobile app offering real-time bus tracking data, and signing up for events through the Recreation and Parks Department. “We are very excited to win this award,” said City Manager Barbara Lipscomb. “I believe this is a great recognition of our commitment to transparency and using technology to better serve Greenville’s residents. It’s also a reflection of how we are living up to our mission statement of providing all citizens with high-quality services in an open, inclusive, professional manner. In the coming years, we will continue to look for ways to effectively use technology to work smarter and put more information at our residents’ fingertips.”

Greenville’s Police Department was also recognized for its commitment to transparency and citizen engagement. The Center noted how the Department makes various types of crime data available online, mapped for easy reference.

Greenville will receive the award, along with the other top 10 ranked cities, at a special awards ceremony during the National League of Cities’ annual conference in Austin, TX, on November 20th.
