Company Gives to Fire Prevention Program

Post Date:10/04/2013

The City of Greenville Fire/Rescue Department has received a $3,500 fire prevention grant from FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers. The money will help fund the City’s Code Red smoke alarm program.

Code Red is a donation-based program to provide Greenville residents with Underwriters Laboratory (UL)-approved smoke alarms at no cost to the citizen as well as educating each resident on how to properly maintain his/her alarm. The FM Global fire prevention grant will also be used to purchase smoke alarms with visual signaling capability for members of the public who are hearing impaired.

“Currently we do not have the ability to serve our public who are deaf or hard of hearing,” said Battalion Chief Shannon Terry. “This financial support from FM Global will help allow us to serve all the members of our community.”

Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries.  “At FM Global, we strongly believe the majority of property damage is preventable, not inevitable,” said Michael Spaziani, manager of the fire prevention grant program. “Far too often, inadequate budgets prevent those organizations working to prevent fire from being as proactive as they would like to be. With additional financial support, grant recipients are actively helping to improve property risk in the communities they serve.”

Through its Fire Prevention Grant Program, FM Global awards grants quarterly to fire departments—as well as national, state, regional, local and community organizations worldwide—that best demonstrate a need for funding, where dollars can have the most demonstrable impact on preventing fire, or mitigating the damage it can quickly cause.
