GREENVILLE, N.C. — There is a new playground in Greenville, and it is one that is designed for everyone.
More than 200 people gathered at the Greenville Town Common on Saturday morning for a dedication ceremony celebrating the opening of the Town Common Inclusive Playground, the city's largest playground that is designed to accommodate children and adults of all ages and ability levels.
"This will be a park that reaches beyond the metal, plastic, and other elements," Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas said. "This will be a place where memories will be made. This will be a place where some children who may not be able to go to some other parks can come out and share smiles with mom, dad, or a grandparent. This is an inclusive park, and that is what we are all about in Greenville."
The playground was made possible by a $750,000 Play Together Construction Grant from Trillium Health Resources, a local governmental agency that manages mental health and provides developmental disability services. Additionally, the City received a $45,000 donation from Greenville Utilities Commission for the park's water features, $23,000 from Vidant Health, and nearly $8,000 from local companies and individuals to help support the total playground cost of just more than $1 million.
"We know this park will be transformative for everyone who plays here," Trillium Vice President of Clinical Operations Cindy Ehlers said.
The Town Common playground is the second all-inclusive playground in Greenville and includes natural features and playground structures such as ziplines, wheelchair-accessible swings, fitness equipment, musical elements, and more in the southeast sector of Town Common.
"This is a second to none recreation facility in Greenville," Greenville Recreation and Parks Director Gary Fenton said.
