City Engineers Help Increase Safety and Accessibility

Post Date:01/03/2013

Travel along many city sidewalks has become easier and safer thanks to the City’s Public Works Department. Workers spent part of 2012 installing special curb cuts on street corners and connecting curbs in Greenville Housing Authority properties.

Workers installed the cuts, which allow individuals to get down to the street level safely, in many areas, including the Moyewood subdivision.

“The City has been working on increasing accessibility and resolving ADA issues across the city,” said Engineer Tim Corley. “We got together with the Housing Authority to identify areas where people were having problems with access and tried to make it so that life would be better for them.”

The cuts also have a special feature which provides both visual and tactile warnings. Truncated domes provide a “nubby” feeling under foot and come in a color that contrasts with the sidewalk to let those with limited to no sight know that they are coming to an area where it might be dangerous, such as a place to cross a street or a high-traffic driveway.

Engineers identified 27 areas which needed improvement and used some of the money set aside annually to help with sidewalk improvements city-wide. They are also working with the Disability Advocacy Center to identify areas that need to be looked at and possibly worked on.
