The Greenville Youth Council (GYC) was established by City Council in 2005 to empower Greenville and Pitt County youth to actively engage in their community. Open to high school students from public, private, and home schools, the Council provides a platform for young people to share their perspectives, raise awareness of youth issues, and contribute to positive change.
The Council’s mission is to encourage youth involvement in community and local government, and its vision is a community where every youth feels valued, empowered, and connected. Members not only learn about civic processes but also gain valuable leadership skills, teamwork experience, and knowledge on relevant topics that impact their peers and neighborhoods.
Each Year, GYC will identify an issue in our city and develop a community event or project to address it. This hands-on approach equips members to advocate for causes, strengthen their leadership abilities, and leave a tangible impact on Greenville and Pitt County.
Through the Youth Council, students gain:
-
Leadership experience and teamwork skills
-
Opportunities to design and deliver community projects
-
A stronger understanding of local government
-
A platform to advocate for youth issues
-
Connections with city leaders and organizations
